2021 Year in Review

What a year! It’s been a mix of extremes, both up and down; like taking 2020 and adding weight to both sides of the scale. Some things I learned:

  1. If you don’t like how something is going, do something about it. Anything. Change it. Make it better. Or worse. At least you’ll be moving again and getting unstuck.

  2. The advice that “You have to get 8 hours of sleep each night” is nonsense. Get 10 hours a night. Or work a full day, then on something until 2am, and then get up at 6 and do it again. Work all day and all night on something that feeds your soul. Sleep a whole day. It doesn’t matter. Free yourself of the numbers and get to living.

  3. The 40 hour work week is also nonsense. Reimagine your definition of “work” and you’ll find yourself either working a lot or playing a lot. The number 40 doesn’t matter.

  4. Don’t settle, always move forward.

  5. Know when to hit life’s cruise control: maybe after finishing a big project (or 2 or 3), or after a seminar or conference. Don’t worry, the momentum will keep your life moving. You need to mentally metabolize recent efforts. You could keep eating and drinking from life, but at some point it will be necessary to end the meal and digest.

  6. Make the bed. The value you get makes it the single easiest and most rewarding thing you’ll do all day.
